Client hired a licensed, local moving company to transport her household goods from Santa Ana, California to Marysville, California. Prior to the move, she was given an estimate of “$5,590.82 Or Less” to pack, load and transport all of her goods. The client agreed to the price, and when the goods arrived in Marysville, the moving company demanded $7,499.00 from the client and threatened to return to the Los Angeles with the goods unless the client paid the inflated sum. As soon as the client paid the demanded amount and the crew began to unload her goods, the client realized that numerous items were severely damaged. Boxes were crushed, others were opened, furniture was gauged, and the client’s cherished piano was almost ruined beyond repair. Client also discovered that $500 was stolen from her during the course of the move and that at least one of the crew members hired by the moving company was a convicted criminal on probation. The firm sued the moving company for, among other causes of action, Breach of Contract, Fraud, Negligence, Negligent Hiring, and Violation of Civil Code §2194.
